From my past year of learning and understanding that is not just about giving a wheelchair, rather the importance of providing the correctly fitted wheelchair for the persons condition.
I am proud to support the wonderful work of:
Motivation Australia is a not for profit disability and development organisation that works in partnership with local organisations to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities in the Asia Pacific region.
Fundraising to support Motivation Australia
How funds raised can help Motivation Australia to achieve our mission: To enhance the quality of life of people with a mobility disability in the Asia Pacific Region.
If any organisation would like to sponser or donate basketsballs etc. please contact us at helen@joinhelen.com or via the Motivation website – http://www.motivation.org.au
In 2011, Motivation Australia is focused on the following programme activities.
Funds raised will help us to:
- Support the growth of wheelchair services in the Solomon Islands, to ensure that wheelchair users living on Provincial Islands can access a wheelchair which meets their needs;
- Carry out a Peer Group Training camp in the Solomon Islands in 2011. This is an opportunity for wheelchair users to teach wheelchair users the skills they need to be active, independent members of their own community;
- Run training in Thailand in wheelchair provision – building the skills of local therapists to enable them to provide wheelchair users living in rural areas with a wheelchair which fits them and meets their needs;
- Work with Rotary Club ‘Wheelchairs for Kids’ to develop a low cost wheelchair for children which is strong, robust and provides kids with the right physical support and develop training in how to provide this product for local staff in low income countries;
- Run training for local staff in East Timor – building the skills of local therapists and technicians to provide wheelchairs and ‘special seating’ for children and adults who need more support than a standard wheelchair provides;
- Continue to support our partners in Kiribati who have initiated a wheelchair service – including working with them to develop future plans for the service and sustainability strategies;
- Begin planning for a regional Peer Group Training camp – bringing wheelchair users from Pacific Island countries together to learn from each other and two experienced wheelchair user trainers.
Below is an indication of the costs involved in our work:
| $260 |
Will help us to… |
Provide one person with a wheelchair – giving that person mobility and the opportunity to leave their home and be an active and contributing member of their community. |
| $1,500 | Set up one Provincial Wheelchair workshop in the Solomon Islands with workbench, tools and lockable storage; orFund the annual fuel costs of one Community Based Health worker to travel to remote villages by boat or motor-bike – providing wheelchair users with the support they need in their own communities. | |
| $2,000 | Provide support for a Wheelchair Basketball Clinic in East Timor in April 2011. Obtain donations of the following: 10 Basketballs, 30 Drink Bottles, 30 T-Shirts, 1 Mobile Basketball Hoop. | |
| $5,000 | Purchase and ship low cost sports wheelchairs to the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea or East Timor to help initiate wheelchair sports. Wheelchair sports can hugely impact on individual wheelchair users’ lives, while at the same time demonstrating to non-disabled people just how much a wheelchair user can do! | |
| $8,000 | Match Government funding to purchase the annual supply of wheelchairs for wheelchair users in Kiribati | |
| $20,000 | Run training in East Timor – giving local staff the skills to provide children and adults who need ‘supportive seating’ with a wheelchair which fits them and provides them with the support they need. | |
| $25,000 | Run a regional Peer Group Training camp. |
